Some Suggestions on Recycling of Steel Drums

For a long time, the recycling of steel drums in China has been ongoing. This work has three major advantages: First, it is used again after the steel drum is repaired, which saves packaging materials and energy; Second, it is conducive to the management and proper disposal of residue in the barrel; Third, it avoids the problem of abandoning old steel barrels and also solves them. The problem of environmental pollution. Therefore, the “International Metal Barrel Repair Association” (IC-DR) was established on the recommendation of the UN Committee on Dangerous Goods. However, there are still some problems in the production and use of reclaimed barrels, which restricts the use of recyclable barrels and thus hinders the development of recyclable barrels.

First, the performance of the recycled drum products should be strictly tested. In the drum recycling industry around the world, the commonly used method is to change the closed steel drums to open steel drums or to replace the corresponding parts on the drum with the same parts; In addition, after changing the closed steel drums to open steel drums, plastic linings and corresponding lids and closures are added to make them a composite packaging drum. However, most of the currently manufactured reclaimers have not undergone rigorous performance tests, which is the key to the problem of recyclable barrels being prone to problems.

We recommend that for this redesigned steel drum, all appropriate tests suitable for this new type of drum must be passed, including drop test, stacking test, hydraulic test, etc. In fact, a recyclable bucket includes a bucket that does not conform to the standard of use, a bucket that meets the requirements of the standard, or a bucket that converts one type into another, or it changes on the basis of not changing the original type. Barrels in the packaging category (eg, I to II or III). In this case, we must give them specific performance requirements.

Second, it should be marked on the steel drum marked with steel thickness before the repair or regeneration, it must be clear whether it can meet the new type of barrels to be processed. Therefore, the remanufacturers of drum repair workers must first obtain the relevant data and conditions of the processed barrels, and these materials are sometimes difficult to know. If the steel drums are marked clearly, it is easy to obtain such information.

The author believes that the thickness of the barrel and the thickness of the bottom of the barrel should be marked on the barrel. This mark should be specified in the steel barrel standard. For example, marked with 1.0 means that the top and bottom of the barrel have the same thickness; 1.2-1.0 respectively represent the thickness of the bottom of the barrel and the thickness of the barrel; and 1.2-0.8-1.0 respectively represent the thickness of the top of the barrel, the barrel and the bottom of the barrel.

Taking into account the acceptance during the transportation process and the inspection by the relevant government agencies, the mark should be placed on the top of the barrel or on the top of the barrel. However, taking into account the regeneration of the barrel, naturally there are two problems: First, for the open barrel, after repair or after re-assembling the barrel of the same type of barrel, should it comply with the meaning of the mark? The second is that for closed drums, after the lids are replaced, the markings are gone, so the data about the thickness of the barrels and the bottoms of the barrels is not available, which makes it difficult to reuse the barrels. In order to solve this problem, it is recommended that the mark position should be near the top of the barrel.

Third, performance marks on steel drums should not be permanent.
According to the requirements of the United Nations Orange Book packaging label, there are two rows of steel barrels marked completely. The second line indicates the quality level of the steel drum and the scope of application, that is, whether it can be used for dangerous goods and as an export packaging.

After the barrel containing dangerous goods is regenerated, it is generally no longer used to contain dangerous goods. However, the recycled barrels are still marked with permanent packaging. Although both reproducers and sellers know this, in practice it is still wrong for the specific user to think that the barrels are suitable for containing dangerous goods because any suitable method to cancel these permanent markings (marks stamped). For reproducers and restorers, the barrels they sell are for non-dangerous goods only. However, these original markings seem to indicate that the barrels are suitable for containing dangerous goods, and this puts the original manufacturer and reproducer or restorer Very difficult situation.

Therefore, it is recommended that the manufacturer of steel drums not mark stamped on the barrel, and its mark should be "durable" (non-stamped). In this way, all drums should be eliminated when they are not suitable or can no longer be used for dangerous goods during the regeneration and repair process. Then, this incomplete mark will indicate that the bucket is no longer suitable or can no longer be used for dangerous goods.

Fourth, the material thickness marking on the steel drum should be permanent. If the thickness marking of the steel drum is the same as the performance marking, it is made non-permanent (non-stamped), so that the barrel needs to be regenerated to contain dangerous goods. It is limited because these "durability" marks are removed during the regeneration process, leaving nothing to know about the barrel's data. Therefore, it is advisable to permanently indicate the barrel thickness data in the first row of the drum bottom or upper part of the drum.
