Top brand ic! berlin launches plotic series 3D printing glasses

3D printing fashion accessories have been around for a while, but in the 3D printing glasses, there is rarely a market-oriented product that can be accepted by many people. However, this situation may change recently. Earlier this year, the famous German fashion glasses manufacturer ic! berlin launched a series of 3D printing glasses called plotic.

As the world's top eyewear brand, ic! berlin has long established an unshakable reputation in fashion glasses for steel and acetate. Therefore, ic! berlin has been at the forefront of the market. The choice of using selective laser sintering (SLS, a technology of 3D printing technology ) to create sunglasses is also reasonable. They are said to have been using this technology to make glasses as early as a few years ago.

Ic! berlin's launch of the plotic series includes two pure plotic sunglasses and two plotic/metal hybrid sunglasses, which use a half-ring design. All glasses are available in eight colors.

According to ic! berlin chief designer Julius Iversen, this series of glasses is printed in 3D with polyamide PA220 material. “This material is hypoallergenic and has been certified for water and food safety. It has a molecular structure similar to natural silk. PA220 is very suitable for making glasses: it is strong and tough, 30% lighter than acetate. Various post-treatments (such as barrel polishing, dyeing, metallization, flocking, etc.) can be performed," he said.

Iversen believes that 3D printing technology opens up a whole new dimension in the design of eyewear. “Plotic allows us to create any geometry that is free of the limitations of traditional manufacturing processes. Some shapes cannot be achieved by cutting raw material sheets, such as our plotic-metal hybrid structure, but now only one digital file is needed. 3D printed it out.” Iversen added, “Using (3D printing technology) we can install a silicone nose pad into Airbus's eyeglass frame, which is impossible with traditional materials. The wearer's comfort is improved and The frame can be quickly adapted to any of our nose pads to ensure a perfect fit no matter how big the nose is."

Of course, in addition to these functional aspects, the appearance of the Plotic series of 3D printing glasses is even less, after all, the design strength of top-quality glasses manufacturers is there. At the Opti 2015 optical show held in Munich this year, Plotic series 3D printing glasses debuted. Through the announcement issued by ic! berlin, we can feel that these German glasses experts are expecting to produce more 3D printed works: "The future of plotic It’s open, and we’re just getting started...” they said.
