Polymerization or other chemical synthesis reactions can be carried out either as a batch reaction unit or as a continuous or semi-continuous reaction unit. Since the batch reaction device usually puts various materials into the reactor first, and then raises the temperature to the reaction temperature, the reaction is carried out under moderate agitation. After the reaction reaches the expected conversion rate, the material is discharged and the kettle is ready for the next batch operation. The batch variation of the product is large, and the product quality is difficult to control and the like. Therefore, in the modern industrial industry, continuous or semi-continuous reaction devices are often used for industrial production.

For semi-continuous reactors, the type is similar to that of a batch reactor, but semi-continuous operation and batch operation are quite different. In a semi-continuous reaction operation, not all of the starting reaction materials are added before the start of a reaction cycle, but a portion of the materials, such as monomers, initiators or other materials, are continuously processed during the reaction according to a pre-programmed procedure. The semi-continuous operation mode can be used to effectively control the reaction rate, copolymer composition, latex particle size distribution, latex particle morphology, and molecular weight and distribution of the polymer, and is therefore often used by modern enterprises for the production of chemical products.

There are two main types of continuous operation reactors, one is a tank reactor, the other is a tubular reactor, and in the tank reactor there are a single-tank continuous reactor and a multi-tank continuous reactor. Multi-tank continuous reactors are more common in production. In the continuous operation of the synthesis process, the reaction materials are continuously input, and the products are continuously output, which can maintain a stable process state for a relatively long period of time, the product quality is improved, and the production scale can be large. For systems with higher reaction rates, continuous operation can achieve greater economic benefits. However, in the case of a low reaction rate and a long reaction time, it is not preferable to continuously operate the reaction apparatus.

Industrial scale continuous emulsion polymerization processes such as styrene butadiene rubber, neoprene and many other rubber based polymers are very common. With the widespread adoption of the DCS control system (Distributed Control System), continuous production processes have received more and more attention and rapid development.

Our school has set up two professional directions of polymer material processing and polymer chemical engineering, and in order to meet the needs of modern scientific and technological personnel training, the development of the combined polymer chemical industry is based on polymer synthesis technology. We have added polymer synthesis process experiments in professional experimental settings. For this reason, we designed and developed the "multi-functional continuous reaction experimental device for polymer chemical synthesis" to meet the needs of undergraduate professional experimental teaching.

"Multifunctional continuous reaction experimental device for polymer chemical synthesis" mainly consists of two parts: mechanical transmission agitation and electronic control, including: two advection pump control feeding system, temperature control instrument and heating system, 1.0L high pressure reactor, machinery The transmission agitation and rotation speed display system, the reflux condensation system, the differential pressure liquid level control system and the cooling water circulation system can realize the polymer chemical synthesis process of continuous feeding, continuous discharging or semi-continuous discharging.

The experimental device can complete continuous feeding, temperature control, stirring reaction, manual control of continuous discharge or differential pressure control semi-continuous discharge, reflux or condensation separation and other reaction processes, the device runs smoothly, no vibration noise, the stirrer adopts magnetic seal Good performance, two inlets on the lid, two inlet and outlet and safety explosion-proof valve, can achieve high pressure reaction of 5.0MPa.

We have used the device to explore the process research related to polymer synthesis and chemical synthesis experiments. At present, the device can realize the preparation of PMMA by continuous emulsion polymerization process, synthetic unsaturated alkyd resin, and semi-continuous preparation. Linear phenolic resin and four or more professional experiments in polymer synthesis or fine chemical synthesis such as continuous esterification to prepare dimethyl 1,6-adipate.

The experimental device can learn and train various aspects of the reaction process, such as: production preparation, feeding, trial production, stable production, operation, temperature, pressure, ratio and other process conditions control, profound understanding of how to improve production efficiency, reduce labor intensity, how Stabilize process conditions and improve product uniformity. The experimental results have a good effect on the teaching effect.

The whole device is reasonable in design, compact in structure, safe in use, accurate in control, reliable in performance and easy to operate, and can realize long-term operation. We have successively opened the "Continuous Emulsion Polymerization Process for PMMA" experiment for three students of Polymer Materials and Engineering. It is very helpful for students to understand the characteristics of continuous polymerization process and how to improve the working efficiency of chemical equipment. The teaching demonstration effect is excellent, which is very good for chemical engineering undergraduates to understand the principle, process and engineering of continuous reaction.
