Heinz uses plant material PET bottles with Coca-Cola

With the partnership with Coca-Cola, Heinz has successfully renewed its packaging for ketchup, which was designed and produced by Coca-Cola. This PET plastic bottle is different from the traditional PET bottle. It is made of plant fiber and improves the utilization of renewable resources. Coca-Cola said that they hope to take this opportunity to let other companies around the world recognize the development trend of food packaging. Recently, Heinz announced the latest design of its ketchup bottle, which was the largest packaging innovation since the company first introduced plastic packaging in 1983. Heinz plans to replace all American 20-ounce ketchup bottles into this PlantBottle package this summer. This new packaging comes from the strategic cooperation between Heinz and Coca-Cola.

PlantBottle is fully recyclable and its appearance, texture and function are similar to those of conventional PET bottles. Coca-Cola stressed that the only difference between PlantBottle and traditional PET bottles is that the bottle contains up to 30% plant content. The factory uses innovative technology to convert natural sugar extracted from plant materials into a key component in PET bottles. Currently, PlantBottle uses sugarcane ethanol from Brazil.
“This cooperation model between Coca-Cola and Heinz is a model for the food and beverage industry, and we are committed to creating a sustainable planet home,” said William R. Johnson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Heinz.
Muhtar Ken, Coca-Cola’s chairman, also very much agrees with this statement: “Our cooperation with Heinz is the best example for companies to promote and develop smart technologies. This is good news for consumers, and it's the earth we depend on for survival. This cooperation also contributes to the development of environmental protection."
Heinz will launch the 20-ounce tomato sauce PlantBottle in June this year. The label “Guess what my bottle is made of” is printed on the label.
In 2009, the Coca-Cola Company launched the PlantBottle for the first time. Its brands include Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fresca and Dasani. Through extensive use of PlantBottle bottles in multiple brands, the company has significantly reduced its utilization of non-renewable resources. According to the life cycle analysis report conducted by The Imperial College London on Coca-Cola, since the company used the PlantBottle, its carbon reduction has increased from 12% to 19%. For 2010 alone, the new packaging eliminated nearly 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, about 60,000 barrels of oil.
Currently, PlantBottle has appeared in Canada, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Japan, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the United States. Coca-Cola plans to promote PlantBottl to another dozen new markets in 2011.

Heinz plans to launch 120 million bottles of PlantBottle in 2011, and Coca-Cola will launch 5 billion bottles at the same time. The goal of Coca-Cola is: By 2020, PlantBottle will fully replace the original plastic packaging.
