Colorectal cancer recurrence risk can be predicted based on the amount of cancer cells in the lymph nodes

A Japanese research team said on the 10th that by examining the trace amount of cancer cells contained in lymph nodes, the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence can be judged.

The research team led by Associate Professor Hakata Yamamoto of Osaka University examined the lymph nodes of about 300 patients with colorectal cancer from 2001 to 2005. These patients came from about 20 hospitals in Osaka Prefecture and Hyogo Prefecture, and all had colorectal cancer resection.

The research team divided the patients into 3 groups based on the amount of cancer cells in the lymph nodes. After a follow-up survey of these patients over the next 5 years, the recurrence rate of the group with the largest number of cancer cells in the lymph nodes reached 27.4%, the middle group was 17%, and the least group was 6.6%. This indicates that the more cancer cells in the lymph nodes, the higher the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence.

The research team said that the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence is very high, and the amount of cancer cells in the lymph nodes can be used as a "warning signal" for cancer recurrence, which helps to use chemotherapy drugs for early prevention and treatment.
